Shirley S. Frost![]() Celebration of the life of Shirley S. Frost, 88, Daytona Beach, who died at home Monday, July 18, 2005, after a short battle with cancer, will be 3 p.m. Friday, July 22, at Community United Methodist Church, corner of Grandview and Harvey, one block south of Main Street, Daytona Beach. Born in Shipman, Va., in 1916, Mrs. Frost graduated from Boston University in 1938 and taught for six years at The Annie Wright Seminar, Tacoma, Wash. She moved to Daytona Beach in 1946 and taught at Mainland High School from 1946 until 1961. She married Barney Frost in 1946, received her master's in 1955 from Stetson University, and taught special education for the disabled from 1961 until 1979. A generous, compassionate, and caring person, she served 59 years as an outstanding resident, contributing to the welfare of the people of Volusia County. She was the first woman lifeguard, and served on Boardwalk Youth Council Advisory Board and with Little Theatre Group. She devoted much of her life to the disabled and founded the Special Olympics in Volusia County. She taught the disabled swimming for 37 years and worked with the American Red Cross swimming program for 57 years. She helped established the award-winning Beachside Neighborhood Watch and helped organize and lead many of its programs until her death. She was a recipient of the Golden Handshake Award for her volunteer work with the disabled and received the Key to the City from the mayor at her 80th birthday celebra- tion. It was difficult to go anywhere with her in the city without someone approaching her and thanking her for teaching them at school or how to swim. She will be missed by many friends, students and family members whose lives were enriched by hers. She was predeceased by her husband, Barney Frost. She is survived by two sons, Sherman Frost and wife, Susan, Blythwood, S.C., and Jack Frost and wife, Trisha, Conway, S.C.; five grandchildren, Heather McCutcheon and husband, Sean, Micah Frost and wife, Majesta, Sarah Crew and husband, Doug, Joshua Frost and Bethany Berry and husband, Howard; three great- grandchildren, Megan, Journey and Maria.
